Germany will train up to 9,000 Ukrainian soldiers by the end of this year.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this on Tuesday, Ukrinform reports.

He said this before the start of the meeting with his EU counterparts in Brussels.

“By the end of the year, up to 9,000 soldiers will undergo training in Germany, which is the leader among all EU countries in the process of training the Ukrainian military,” the German Minister informed.

A multinational Bundeswehr training program for the Ukrainian military is currently underway in Germany, as part of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM), which was launched in November last year.

The mission involves training Ukrainian servicemen in basic skills such as weapons handling, shooting, medical and engineering training, as well as collective training of units of various levels.

Previously, Ukrainian crews trained on Leopard 2 main battle tanks in Germany.

Also in Germany, Ukrainians mastered the Patriot air defense system.

In addition, training of the Ukrainian military on former Danish Leopard 1A5DK tanks is already underway at the German training center.

80 Leopard 1A5DK tanks after repair, which were purchased by the German company FFG after their final withdrawal from the Danish army in 2005, will be delivered to Ukraine.

The Danish and German sides have allocated €3 million for the repair and modernization of these tanks. The German concern Krauss-Maffei Wegmann started preparing Leopard 1A5 tanks for delivery to Ukraine at the beginning of February.

In general, as part of the joint project of Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany, 187 Leopard tanks will be transferred to Ukraine.
