30 million hectares of the territory of Ukraine need to be demined – the Ministry of Internal Affairs

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that pyrotechnic units had already demined 2 million hectares of Ukraine’s territory. In total, demining should be carried out on 30 million hectares.

The relevant statement was made by Ukrainian Internal Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Aliona Matvieieva during a briefing.

She noted that in addition to 30 million hectares of land, demining should also be carried out in the Black and Azov Seas. This area of “pollution” can be up to 19 thousand square kilometers.

Complete demining of the territory of Ukraine can take up to 10 years. These time frames are based on international experience.

“Currently, the main efforts of our services are concentrated in Chernihiv and Sumy regions, as well as in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where hostilities continue,” Aliona Matvieieva said.

It is known that 274 settlements were cleared of munition in the process of demining of Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions.

As previously reported, in the end of May the US embassy in Ukraine reported an allocation of $ 4 million for demining actions.

Such support will involve the international organization The HALO Trust in clearing the territory of Ukraine of explosives.

Sappers from Latvia and Estonia will also help Ukrainian demining specialists.
