The production of new ammunition in Sweden is experiencing delays due to a shortage of military training areas.

Stefan Krol, President of the Bofors test center, said that this problem is relevant across Europe.

“The queues for testing new ammunition across Europe are long, and the need for ammunition is great,” said Stefan Krol.

The limited number of ammunition firing ranges in Europe results in batches of ammunition ready for immediate testing.

The Head of the test center of the Swedish arms company Bofors said that testing requires daylight, so “test centers that have to check all the batches that are delivered cannot work on the night shift.”

He also said that Bofors currently has a one-year waiting list.

Robert Limmergård, Secretary General of the Association of Swedish Security and Defense Companies, acknowledged that Sweden is facing a crisis situation, prompting the search for solutions “necessary to improve our ability to supply Ukraine and other partner countries.”

He suggested opening another training area as a possible solution.

It is worth noting that a specialized test center needs to have modern test equipment and laboratories capable of testing everything from components to complete weapons systems.

The Bofors Test Center has a well-developed infrastructure with a 250 km long road network connecting many test sites, laboratories, offices and other buildings.

The range has an approximate maximum firing range of 25 km, an approximate width of 4 km, and provides a total confined test area of approximately 200 km².

In March, it became known that Sweden would provide €30 million for a Czech initiative to purchase ammunition for the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
