CV90: Denmark and Sweden to supply additional infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine

Denmark and Sweden announced a new military aid package for Ukraine.

Under it, the countries agreed to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with additional CV90 infantry fighting vehicles.

The press service of the Swedish government reported on this.

The decision was announced during a joint meeting of Troels Lund Poulsen and Paul Johnson, Ministers of Defense of Denmark and Sweden.

“The Ministers of Defense of Sweden and Denmark signed a joint declaration of intent to further support Ukraine in the field of combat vehicles,” the statement reads.

It is noted that Denmark will initially contribute DKK 1.8 billion (about $264 million), which will help fund the production of a certain number of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles for Ukraine.

Sweden will support the procurement within an agreement signed between the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and Ukraine in July this year.

The Declaration of Intent means that the parties will work on procuring additional CV90 IFVs for Ukraine, which will strengthen the overall capabilities of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson added that the government had previously provided Ukraine with 50 CV90 infantry fighting vehicles, which have proven to be “effective and highly appreciated” in Ukraine.

CV90 for Ukraine

In February 2023, the Swedish government allocated one of its largest military aid packages to Ukraine, which for the first time, included CV90 infantry fighting vehicles.

Ukraine was to receive 51 CV9040C infantry fighting vehicles from Sweden, which were previously used by Swedish troops in Liberia and Afghanistan. Compared to the standard CV90, the 9040C version has a higher level of protection. After that, Ukrainian military and technicians traveled to Sweden to study the operation of IFVs and how to maintain them.

The IFV is equipped with, among other things, a 40mm automatic cannon, smoke grenade launchers, and machine guns. The cannon can be used to fight infantry and hit armored vehicles at a distance of up to four kilometers.

In August, Ukraine and Sweden declared their intention to jointly produce CV90 infantry fighting vehicles in Ukraine. Ukraine previously expressed interest in purchasing up to 1,000 of these infantry fighting vehicles.
