EU Council approves 5th military aid tranche to Ukraine for €500 million
The EU Council approved the fifth tranche of military aid to Ukraine for €500 million.
The Head of the European Council Charles Michel announced this on Twitter.
He wrote that he welcomes EU Council political agreement on the fifth tranche of military aid to Ukraine.
The assistance is aimed at protecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and its civilian population from Russian military aggression.
According to Michel, the total cost of weapons and military equipment EU countries provide to the Armed Forces of Ukraine will reach €2.5 billion, including the new tranche.
That means the volume of the new assistance tranche will amount to €500 million.
Funds come from the European Peace Fund (EPF) allowing the EU to support the capabilities and stability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
This support is only part of Europe’s efforts to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian attacks.
The fourth tranche of military aid to Ukraine was approved in May. Its total amount was also €500 million.
The European Union will also partially cover the costs of Polish-made KRAB ACS purchase for Ukraine.
The EU has also started supplying the Armed Forces of Ukraine with more than 90 heavy-duty trucks through the European Peace Fund.
This is part of a larger €31 million aid package approved on December 2, 2021.
