Gepard SPAAG shoots down Russian cruise missile

One of the Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns transferred by Germany shot down a Russian cruise missile during a massive Russian missile strike on Ukraine.

The video was released on social media.

The system is designed to shield important infrastructure and military units from attacks by helicopters and aircraft at low and ultra-low altitudes successfully worked on a cruise missile.

Now this is the first recorded shooting down of an air target with this anti-aircraft gun during the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Gepard SPAAG

Gepard SPAAG is a German-made anti-aircraft self-propelled gun. The system is designed to directly cover ground forces and protect important infrastructure.

Gepard is capable of striking aerial targets at distances from 100 m up to 4 km and at altitudes up to 3 km, flying at a speed of up to 350-400 m/s, as well as ground (surface) targets at a range of up to 4,500 meters.

Two 35mm Oerlikon KDA automatic guns and two radars that determine the target at a distance of up to 15 km, are installed on the turret, which is capable of making a full turn.

The German system has an automated fire control system. It takes into account atmospheric pressure, air temperature and humidity, as well as wind speed and direction. All this allows you to save time.

Currently, 30 such anti-aircraft self-propelled guns have been transferred to Ukraine by Germany.

Gepard efficiency

In early November, an article was published with an assessment of the Ukrainian military on the effectiveness of this SPAAGs.

According to the military, only one Gepard with its 35mm guns has already been able to destroy two Russian cruise missiles and a double-digit number of drones.

“Shahed drones are very easy to deal with. Gepard radar detects them well and 35mm rounds quickly deal with slow drones,” the military said.
