The German government will soon decide whether to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

The new Minister of Defense of Germany, Boris Pistorius said this in an interview with ARD.

He called for patience in the decision-making process.

According to the minister, Germany has to consider many factors and will not make a hasty decision.

“It’s not just a matter of supplying or not supplying these tanks, but weighing the consequences of inaction as well as action,” Pistorius said.

“Leopard is a heavy armored weapon that can also be used for offensive purposes. And you have to think very carefully when you transfer them. A decision will be made soon. But it depends on many factors,” the Minister of Defense said.

Boris Pistorius believes that in the interests of Germany and Europe, this should be done carefully and in a balanced way, “and not hastily or carelessly.”

“Decisions are made when they are necessary – and this happens in the office. Among other things, it is about the security of our own [German – Ed.] population and the statement that we [Germany – Ed.] do not want to become a party in the war. And at the same time, to support Ukraine with all our might in order to win this war,” the minister said.

The minister noted that there are other states “that can make their contribution”. One of them “acted together and in concert as allies at all stages during this terrible war” and had a good experience in the process. He said that a decision would be made soon.

Previously, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in an interview with the French TV channel LCI that the country would not object if Poland handed over German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

As previously reported, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki believes that if Germany does not agree to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine, the allies should create a smaller coalition to support Ukraine.

The German Spiegel reported that Germany could hand over 19 Leopard 2A5 tanks to Ukraine, those tanks were used to depict enemy forces in the Bundeswehr combat training centers – they simulated enemy tanks during maneuvers.
