In Turkey, the second diesel-electric submarine of the Reis-class was solemnly launched.

This is stated in the message of the Ministry of Defense of Turkey.

The Type 214 project boat was launched at the Gölcük Naval Shipyard in Turkey.

The submarine is named “Hizir Reis” after the Berber corsair Hair ad-Din Barbarossa, who became the ruler of Algeria and then turned into admiral of the Ottoman Empire.

Simultaneously with the launch of the submarine, the shipyard carried out the first welding of the hull elements of the future sixth submarine of the series, called “Selman Reis”.

Speaking at the submarine launch ceremony, President Erdogan said that Turkey plans to commission one Reis-class submarine a year, so that by 2027 the country’s fleet will have six new submarines.

According to him, the armament of new boats will include promising “Atmaca” anti-ship missiles and “Akya” torpedoes which were developed inhouse by Turkish defense companies.

The contract, signed in July 2009 between the Defence Industry Agency of Turkey and the German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, involves construction of six submarines with an air-independent propulsion system under a technology transfer agreement.

It is expected that the first submarines of the series will be armed with heavy Mk48 533mm torpedoes and DM2A4, Harpoon anti-ship missiles and mines, and subsequent submarines will receive Turkish torpedoes and missiles.
