Ilyushin Il-76 military cargo plane crashes in Russia
A Russian Ilyushin Il-76 military cargo plane was bound for Belgorod and crashed near Ryazan on Friday morning, June 24.
This was reported by the local media with reference to the Russian Defense Ministry.
The aircraft was on its way from Orenburg to Belgorod and had to refuel in Ryazan.
According to preliminary data, four people died.
“A military transport plane IL-76 “crash-landed” in the Ryazan region. During a training flight without cargo the crew decided to land on the ground due to a detected engine problem” the media report.
The plane was “partially destroyed” in the collision with the ground.
According to Russian sources, there were 10 people on board.
The military cargo plane crashed onto a field near Mykhailivsky Highway, not far from a residential area.
The incident started a fire, but it was completely extinguished. The plane damaged power lines during the crash. No destruction on land was recorded.
The IL-76 is a Soviet / Russian medium-sized military cargo plane developed by the Ilyushin Design Bureau.
It was designed to deliver and land personnel, equipment, and cargo for various purposes. The aircraft operates from concrete and ground airfields.
Previously, Russia has set up a new field airstrip in the Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine.
