German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said that Ukraine will receive the first of four IRIS-T systems in the coming days.

This is stated in a corresponding statement on the website of the German Ministry of Defense.

“Russian missile and kamikazi drone attacks terrorize primarily civilians. Therefore, we now support Ukraine in particular with anti-aircraft weapons. In the coming days, the first of the four most modern IRIS-T SLMs will appear,” said Christine Lambrecht.

It is also noted that Christine Lambrecht condemned the missile attacks on Ukraine and called the behavior of the Russian Federation “another unacceptable escalation.” The German Minister of Defense stressed the support of Ukraine and the supply of modern air defense systems.

It should be reminded that earlier it was reported that by the end of the year Ukraine should receive two of the latest IRIS-T anti-aircraft missile systems.

In general, Germany plans to transfer 4 such systems to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Two of them will be sent in early 2023.

The contract with Diehl Defense for the purchase of the IRIS-T SL anti-aircraft missile system was concluded in June 2022. The deal is funded by the German government.

The basis of the air defense system is the IRIS-T (Infra Red Imaging System Tail) missile with infrared guidance.

Launchers can have a wheeled (MAN 8×8) or tracked chassis (two-section all-terrain BvS10 vehicle) and contain 4 or 8 containers with missiles.

There are modifications of medium and small range. IRIS-T SLM can hit targets at a distance of up to 40 km, and in the “shorter” SLS version – up to 25.

The main sensor of the system is the Australian CEAFAR GBMMR radar with an active phased array (AFAR).

Also, the German TRML-4D (Hensoldt) radar can be used, which allows you to detect targets at a distance of up to 250 km.

The system was created in 2014, and the only operator of the system since 2019 is Sweden. The German government issued an export permit for 23 units of Egypt.
