In Ukraine the production of fragmentation rounds to the Grom gun and SPG-9 recoilless gun has begun
In Ukraine the production of OG-9U HE-Fragmentation projectiles has begun for the 2A28 Grom 73-mm gun which is the main weapon of the BMP-1 and SPG-9 recoilless gun.
Photos with the round were published in the Terra Kozakorum Telegram channel.
In the published images, projectiles are equipped with a PG-15P powder charge to the 2A28 Grom gun, which is standard for HEAT rounds.
As it is shown in the photo, the round was made in 2024 (marking 02-24), and the powder charge – in 1983. It is not known whether the rounds were unearthed or are coming in this form from the manufacturer.
The OG-9 HE-Frag rounds themselves are standard for both the armament of the SPG-9 tripod-mounted man-portable recoilless gun and the 2A28 Grom gun. The only difference is powder charges.

The recoilless gun uses OG-9P powder charges for OG-9 fragmentation rounds and PG-9P for PG-9 HEAT rounds, and the 2A28 gun OG-15P for OG-9 fragmentation rounds and PG-15P for PG-9P HEAT rounds.
Visually, powder charges differ as an open type in a grenade launcher, so packed in a case in a gun.
The difference from powder charges for Frag and HEAT rounds is in different round initial speed, which is due to the difference in range of shots. After all, the maximum range of the Frag is more than 4000 meters, and the HEAT range is up to 1300 meters.
By inheritance from the USSR, Ukraine did not receive these types of ammunition, and therefore this is a completely new production.
In Ukraine, these rounds are used by the aforementioned SPG-9 recoilless guns with their modifications, BMP-1 and BMD-1 infantry fighting vehicles.
As for the 2A28 gun from the complex of weapons of combat vehicles, the invaders recently demonstrated one such on a wheeled chassis, made of the remnants of BMP-1.
That is, the production of such scarce fragmentation rounds is quite in demand.
