The Saeima of Latvia urgently declared May 9 the Day of Remembrance for those killed in Ukraine.

Militarnyi informs about this.

On Thursday, April 7, the Saeima had passed in the last reading a Law designating May 9 to be the day of remembrance for Ukrainians killed in Russia’s aggressive war, “European Pravda” writes with reference to Delfi.

A day of rememberance will be dedicated to both civilians and defenders of Ukraine who died as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The proposal was supported by 61 Members of Parliament, and 18 voted against it.

According to the legislation, on the day of mourning, state flags will be lowered.

Latvian national flags along with the Ukrainian flags would have to be raised at the President’s residence, the Cabinet of Ministers building, and the Saeima building.

State and local authorities will not be allowed to hold mass entertainment and festive events on this day – permits for such events will not be issued.

Previously, the Seima has approved amendments to legislation banning symbols used at mass events to denote military aggression and war crimes, except in cases when the goal is not to justify or glorify such crimes.

The law regulations also include the “Z” and “V” symbols.
