Latvia to increase military aid to Ukraine
This morning, the Government of Latvia supported the initiative of the Ministry of Defense to provide additional military assistance to Ukraine.
The Delfi reported about this with reference to the Minister of Defense of Latvia Artis Pabriks.
The country’s Defense Ministry did not comment on the type of assistance it will provide to Ukrainians.
On Thursday, a closed extraordinary meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers took place to consider this issue.
According to Delfi, since the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, the government of Latvia held several closed meetings to make decisions on assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Latvia has already provided over €200 million in military support to Ukraine.
The country provided weapons and individual equipment, unmanned aerial vehicles, dry rations, ammunition, anti-tank weapons, and Stinger man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS).
Sappers from Latvia are assisting Ukraine in demining and neutralizing the explosive devices.
Latvia also sent converted ATVs to Ukraine to use in the difficult terrain in war zones.
Previously, Latvia has submitted a request to the United States government for the purchase of HIMARS rocket systems.
The Latvian government hopes to have its first missile systems by 2025.
The purchase of the M142 is a joint decision and project of all the Baltic countries.
