NATO Secretary General proposes to pledge € 500 million yearly to Ukraine – mass media
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg calls on the member states of the Alliance to pitch in a total of € 500 million a year to help Ukraine.
Bloomberg reported this with reference to its sources.
The Head of the military alliance wants allies to boost contributions to a fund for NATO’s comprehensive assistance package (CAP) for Ukraine, which includes short-term aid like fuel, protective equipment, and anti-drone systems used to counter Russia’s invasion.
The fund is also aimed at providing Ukraine with long-term support to help modernize its armed forces and meet NATO interoperability standards.
According to Bloomberg sources, it will primarily regard non-lethal weapons.
At the same time, helping Ukraine move to NATO standards could also help allies sustain lethal support with modern weapons deliveries during the war as allies run low on Soviet-era arms.
The media notes that the details of Stoltenberg’s proposal have yet to be worked out.
NATO Secretary General himself shared on Monday that the alliance’s foreign ministers would agree to start working on a multi-year program for Ukraine when they gather in Brussels for a two-day meeting starting Tuesday, April 4.
In February, Jens Stoltenberg announced that the NATO countries will ramp up the industrial production of weapons and ammunition.
New weapons are necessary to replenish the stocks in the arsenals of the Alliance countries and further assist Ukraine in the war with Russia.
On Monday, it was reported that Denmark and Norway agreed on the joint supply of artillery shells to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They concluded an agreement to transfer 8,000 shells for the 155mm artillery.
According to the assessment of the Ministry of Defense of Denmark, the ammunition will be used by CAESAR self-propelled howitzers. The Danish parliament decided to transfer 19 such self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine at the beginning of the year.
