New “Surat” destroyer and “Udaygiri” frigate were launched for Indian Navy

The Ministry of Defense of India held the launching ceremony of the fourth guided missile destroyer of P15B class and the second stealth frigate of P17A class.

This is stated in the message of the Ministry of Defense of India.

The ceremony took place at the Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) in Mumbai.

The new destroyer was named “Surat”, and the frigate – “Udaygiri”. Both warships have been designed in-house by the Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and built at MDL, Mumbai.

The Indian Government’s Security Committee approved a project to build four low-profile destroyers under Project 15B in December 2010.

The contract for their supply for the Indian Navy was signed on January 28, 2011. The estimated value of the order was 293.4 billion ind. rupees ($ 4.89 billion).

The launch ceremony of the main ship of the series, named “Visakhapatnam“, took place on April 20, 2015. The destroyer was transferred to the Indian Navy on October 28, 2021 and joined the navy in November 2021.

In September 2016, the second destroyer, “Mormugao”, was launched. The third ship in the series, the “Imphal”, was launched on April 20, 2019.

The fourth ship was laid in July 2018. It is planned that the second destroyer of the series will be adopted in 2022, and “Imphal” – in 2023. The project is planned to be completed by 2024.

Under the P17A program, a total of seven ships are to be constructed by two state-owned shipbuilding companies: Mazagon Docks Limited in Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. in Kolkata.

Contracts worth 480 billion rupees ($ 7.5 billion) for their construction were signed by the Indian Ministry of Defense in February 2015. MDL acts as the main shipyard and will build four frigates, while GRSE is doing the other three.

Steel cutting for the main ship of the series, “Nilgiri”, began at MDL on February 17, 2017. The frigate was launched on September 28, 2019. The ship is scheduled to be delivered to the Indian Navy by August 2022. The second ship was laid by MDL on May 7, 2019. It is expected that the MDL shipyard will deliver the ordered ships to the Indian Navy in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, and GRSE – in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
