Norway considers providing Ukraine with additional NASAMS air defense systems
The Norwegian government proposes that the country’s parliament approves the order of additional NASAMS air defense systems for Ukraine.
The relevant statement was published on the website of the Norwegian government.
It regards ten new launchers and four command posts to be purchased from Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace (KDA).
The cost of ordering these elements of the NASAMS air defense system is NOK 3.45 billion. They are planned to be ordered in addition to the equipment already transferred to Ukraine as part of military assistance.
“The Norwegian NASAMS system saves Ukrainian lives and prevents the destruction of buildings and infrastructure. Russian missile and drone attacks are large-scale and brutal, so air defense systems are absolutely crucial for Ukraine. At the same time, I am concerned that we restore air defense capabilities for our own defense as soon as possible,” says Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.
As previously reported, in December 2023, the Norwegian government approved the transfer of additional NASAMS air defense systems to Ukraine worth $30 million.
At the time, it was reported that some of the equipment would be shipped directly from the country’s armed forces stocks to ensure quick delivery to Ukraine, while the rest will be ordered and delivered later.
Eight launchers and four command posts were to be ordered.
The government clarified that the cost of equipment planned for transfer to Ukraine from Norwegian armed forces stocks was equivalent to the cost of the ordered one.
Additional launchers and command posts can be included in the network of systems already deployed in Ukraine or form a new one.
At the end of January this year, Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace announced that it had received an order from the Norwegian government to supply new elements of the NASAMS air defense system to replace systems having been transferred to Ukraine.
The contract value for the new launchers and command posts is approximately NOK 1.4 billion, with deliveries due in 2026-2027.
