Slovakia is ready to hand over the T-72 tanks to Ukraine if it receives Leopard 2 tanks from Germany
Slovakia is ready to hand over its T-72 tanks to Ukraine.
The Polish publication Defense24.pl reported about this option.
Jaroslav Nad, Slovak Defense Minister shared on Friday (May 6th) at Slyach Air Base that his country still has the equipment that could be transferred to Ukraine.
The contingency for the transfer, as noted by the Minister, is to obtain other equipment as a replacement.
At the Slyach Air Base, where German and Dutch servicemen are stationed, Jaroslav Nad had a meeting with Christine Lambrecht, German Defense Minister, and Kajsa Ollongren, Dutch Defense Minister.
He told reporters that when it comes to providing military assistance to Ukraine, Slovakia has BMPs and T-72 tanks manufactured back in the USSR.
“We can replace this equipment with what is available,” Nad said.
According to the Slovak media, Bratislava is ready to get rid of 30 T-72 tanks in exchange for German Leopard 2 tanks.
Additionally, repairs of the Ukrainian military equipment have started at Slovakia’s defense industry facilities.
Konstrukta Defence, a Slovak defense industry company, has signed a respective contract with Ukraine. The first repair batch will consist of dozens of BRDM-2 amphibious armored scout vehicles.
Slovakia has also become the first NATO country to supply Ukraine with S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems to protect against Russian airstrikes.
