The Russian military uses the territory of foreign countries to evade Ukrainian air defenses.

The Russians repeatedly carry out such actions during missile attacks and kamikaze drone strikes on Ukraine.

Sometimes they would even use the NATO country’s airspace for this purpose.

This can be concluded based on the number of incidents that occurred during the Russian strikes.

The first such officially recorded incident occurred on February 10, 2023. During a missile attack on Ukraine, Russian cruise missiles crossed the airspace of a NATO country.

According to the Ukrainian military, Russian missiles launched from the Black Sea crossed the borders of Moldova and Romania.

“Today, February 10, at 10:18 a.m., two Russian Kalibr cruise missiles crossed the state border of Ukraine with the Republic of Moldova. At approximately 10:33 a.m., these missiles crossed Romanian airspace. After that, they again entered the airspace of Ukraine at the crossing point of the borders of the three states,” Valeriy Zaluzhny, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported.

It is worth noting that this was not the first time that Russian cruise missiles have flown over the territory of Moldova. For example, during a massive missile strike against Ukraine on October 10, 2022, three air targets were spotted in Moldova, crossing the country’s airspace.

At the time, Moldova emphasized that these objects posed a danger to the country’s infrastructure, as well as to civilian aircraft flying through the country’s airspace.

And on the morning of October 31, 2022, during another shelling of Ukraine, a Russian cruise missile fell in the northern part of Moldova in the village of Naslavcea. It was shot down by the Ukrainian air defense.

The latest incident occurred on the night of August 2. The Russians used Iranian Shahed kamikaze drones against Ukrainian port infrastructure on the Danube in the city of Izmayil. Then, these drones violated the airspace of Romania, which is a NATO member.

The Mayor of the Romanian Cetalkoi commune in the border town of Tulcea reported that Russian drones flew over the houses of local residents. According to eyewitnesses, drones entered from different directions, presumably to confuse Ukrainian air defenses.

According to him, local residents reported that drones flew over their houses, and one of them allegedly fell into the forest. The mayor reported that the search for the wreckage had been started, but the drone’s wreckage was never found. Local residents started to panic because of the sounds of anti-aircraft weapons of the Defense Forces of Ukraine and the explosions of Russian kamikaze drones.

After the Russian attack on the border port, the Ministry of Defense of Romania declared that there were no direct military threats to the country.

Most likely, the Russians are deliberately directing their kamikaze drones through the territory of Romania to evade Ukrainian air defense until the last moment before the strike. Similar actions of the aggressor country pose a danger not only to Ukraine but also to our neighboring countries.
