The US plans to transfer up to 100 PAC-3 missiles for the Patriot air defense system to Taiwan – Bloomberg

The US plans to sell at least 100 PAC-3 missiles for the Patriot air defense system along with radar and support equipment to Taiwan.

It is noted that the sale of equipment will be carried out under the deal valued at $882 million. This proposal was made under the provisions of a 2010 sale to Taiwan and, thus, technically is not new.

The deal is classified as an enhancement to the earlier deal, with a potential total value of $2.81 billion.

It is emphasized that the U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to Bloomberg’s request. Notice of the proposal is expected to be printed in the Congressional Record and will be reviewed by Congress for up to 30 days.

In total, the transfer of up to 100 Patriot PAC-3 missiles, as well as M903 Launcher modification kits and software upgrades, is expected.

This sale will strengthen Patriot systems “for their missile defense capabilities, protection of territorial integrity, and deterrence of threats to regional stability,” said the U.S. State Department in a statement.

The MIM-104 Patriot is an American surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed and manufactured by the U.S. defense contractor Raytheon.

It consists of an aerial intercept missile, a high-performance radar system, and several launchers.

PAC-3 (Patriot Advanced Capability-3) is the latest and most advanced modernization of American air defense systems of the Patriot class.

As previously reported, last year, the Taiwanese military conducted fire tests of the Patriot PAC-3 (Patriot Advanced Capability-3) air defense system on the territory of the United States.
