The USA approved the sale of NASAMS air defense systems to Ukraine
The US Department of State has approved the possible Foreign Military Sale of the NASAMS air defense system to the government of Ukraine.
This was announced in a message published on the website of the Defense Security Cooperation Agency of the United States Ministry of Defense (DSCA).
This regards the possible sale of air defense systems and related equipment at an estimated cost of $285 million.
On May 24, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying the U.S. Congress.
Ukraine has requested to purchase the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), which includes one AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel Radar, a Fire Distribution Center (FDC), canister launchers, secure communications, and other equipment.
The potential deal also includes U.S. Government technical support, test and support equipment, technical documentation, and spare parts.
Raytheon Corporation is the principal contractor of the future deal to supply NASAMS air defense systems to Ukraine.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” the statement reads.
Ukraine has an urgent need to increase its capabilities to defend against Russian missile strikes and aircraft. Acquiring and effectively deploying the NASAMS air defense system will enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend its people and protect critical national infrastructure.
NASAMS systems are produced by a consortium of the American corporation Raytheon Technologies and the Norwegian group Kongsberg. The NASAMS SAM became the first ground-based system to use AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile) missiles.
Currently, two batteries of NASAMS air defense systems are in service with the Ukrainian Air Force. Also, six more systems were ordered by the United States and one by Canada as part of military aid to Ukraine.
Norway also recently announced plans to transfer two fire platoons of this air defense system to Ukraine. NASAMS has proven to be an effective air defense system in the war with Russia.
