Ukraine will be armed with Leopard tanks

Ukraine will be provided with a company of Leopard tanks through the international coalition of allies.

President of Poland Andrzej Duda announced that his country would participate in the transfer of these tanks.

“Recently, we have indeed decided to transfer such assistance [tanks] to Ukraine from Poland. A company of Leopard tanks will be provided within the framework of the coalition,” Duda stated in Lviv at a press conference with the presidents of Ukraine and Lithuania as part of the Lublin Triangle.

The version and modification of the Leopard tanks to be provided were not yet named.

The day before, Jakub Kumoch, Head of the International Policy Bureau in the Chancellery of the President of Poland, shared in an interview with ZET radio that at the meeting, the possibility of transferring German Leopard 2 tanks, which are in service with the Polish army, to Ukraine, would be discussed.

Such transfers could change the attitude of European politicians toward the issue of transferring heavy weapons, in particular, Western-made tanks, to Ukraine.

These supplies have been discussed since the spring, but so far, no country has decided to transfer Western-made tanks to Ukraine.

Finland and Germany claimed that Ukraine would get tanks from these countries only if their NATO partners would do it.

Helsinki notes that they are ready to supply tanks to Ukraine, provided that several other states agree.

However, the transfer of German tanks to a third country requires the consent of Berlin.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported on Monday that according to government official Steffen Hebestreit, the Federal Government had not yet received any requests to export main battle tanks from European partner countries.

As previously reported, the United Kingdom might transfer about ten Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine. This amount is enough to equip a squadron.
