Ukraine will receive additional M2 Bradley IFVs in the new U.S. assistance package
The new military aid package from the United States will include 50 M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. Thus, the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ fleet of these IFVs will grow to 100 units.
Associated Press reported this, citing a senior U.S. DoD official.
He also confirmed the will to transfer about 100 Stryker 8×8 wheeled armored fighting vehicles to Ukraine. They could be delivered to the Armed Forces within the next few weeks.
The official explained the absence of American M1 Abrams tanks in the aid package: “The Abrams tank is a very complicated piece of equipment. It’s expensive, it’s hard to train on. It has a jet engine, I think it’s about three gallons per mile of jet fuel (700 liters per 100 km – ed.). It is not the easiest system to maintain… we should not be providing the Ukrainians systems they can’t repair, they can’t sustain, and they and that they over the long term can’t afford, because it’s not helpful.”
The transfer of 50 units of M2 Bradley was announced in the first week of January.
The United States will provide Ukraine with the M2A2 ODS version developed after analyzing the experience of Operation Desert Storm.
Servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be trained to operate with Bradley in Germany.
Soldiers of the 47th Mechanized Brigade have already released the first training footage.
The M2 Bradley is the main infantry fighting vehicle in service with the United States Military. It has been produced since 1981 by BAE Systems. During the IFV’s development, the design engineers required that the vehicle be as fast as the M1 Abrams tank and capable of performing the same transport functions as the tracked M113 APC.
The Bradley is armed with an M242 Bushmaster 25mm autocannon. The equipped ammunition is 300 rounds, while the transported ammunition is 600 rounds. The IFV’s arsenal also includes armor-piercing, sub-caliber, and high-explosive ammunition. Bradley also has a TOW ATGM launcher. The additional armament consists of the M240C machine gun. The IFV can be equipped with a mounted, so-called embrasure weapon, namely six M231 5.56mm fixed automatic rifles in loopholes.
The engine compartment is located in the front right part of the hull. The vehicle has a 500 hp turbo diesel engine. The transmission has three fixed “forward” gears and one “back.”
The driver sits to the left of the engine compartment. Places of commander (right) and gunner are located in the IFV`s turret.
The United States M2 Bradley is also in service with the militaries of Greece, Croatia, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon.
