French FAMAS Felin assault rifles entered service with the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

A photo with this weapon was shown by the Ukrainian military with the callsign “Zaks” on X (former Twitter).

The FAMAS Felin is a FAMAS G2 rifle from the French company GIAT Industries.

The rifle was modified for the use of a laser rangefinder and electronic sights that work at any time of the day, both in light and at night.

In the late 1990s, the FELIN program was launched in France, designed to create a 21st century infantryman assault rifle.

As part of this program, the modified FAMAS G2 rifle was equipped with various equipment.

The equipment also included a data transfer system (including an image from the sight) to the soldier’s helmet display and then to the computer.

FAMAS rifles were used in various operations, including the 1991 Desert Storm and mid-to-late 1990s peacekeeping operations, where they proved to be reliable and convenient weapons.

The FAMAS rifle has a bullpup configuration in all modifications (the magazine and chamber are located behind the trigger and grip).

The FAMAS barrel is unusual in that it has only 3 right riflings with a twist of 228 millimeters, which allows almost any 5.56mm cartridge to be used.

Recall that in November 2023, it became known that Ukraine ordered firearms from the French company Verney-Carron S.A., which specializes in the production of rifles and accessories for them.

The agreement provides for the production and transfer to the Armed Forces of Ukraine of about 12 thousand rifles and 600 40mm under-barrel grenade launchers.
