US considers selling missiles and fighter jet bombs to Kuwait

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of the possible aircraft munitions sale to Kuwait.

The possible sale will be carried out through the American intergovernmental program Foreign Military Sales (FMS).

The delivery should include Raytheon sixty (60) AIM-120 C-7/8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs).

In addition, 350 Boeing GBU-31 (V) 1 JDAM 2,000 lb guided bomb kits and 702 Raytheon GBU-48 Enhanced Paveway II (EPW-II) 1,000 lb guided bomb kits.

The estimated cost of the sale is $397 million.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the infrastructure of a Major Non-NATO ally that has been an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East,” the DSCA’s message said.

The sale would improve Kuwait’s ability to counter current and future regional threats.

Kuwait intends to use these missiles and ammunition with a fleet of Eurofighter Typhoon fighters.

“Kuwait has shown a commitment to modernizing its military and will have no difficulty absorbing these weapons into its armed forces,” the agency emphasizes.

The proposed sale will not affect the combat readiness of the US defense.

In December 2021, the Kuwait Air Force adopted the first batch of two Typhoon fighters manufactured by the Italian company Leonardo.

On April 5, 2016, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense signed a contract with the Leonardo group, which represents the Eurofighter consortium, to supply 28 Typhoon multirole fighters.
