Cluster munitions are already in Ukraine
Cluster munitions are already in Ukraine. Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, Commander of the Tavria operational-strategic group, announced this.
The Brigadier General shared this in an interview with CNN.
“We just got them, we haven’t used them yet, but they can radically change the battlefield. This is a very powerful weapon. The enemy also understands that by getting this ammunition, we will have an advantage. And it will give up the part of the frontline where we will be able to use them,” Brig. Gen. Tarnavskyi shared.
Tarnavskyi emphasized the restrictions on using clusters, noting that their use is prohibited in heavily populated areas, even if occupied by Russian forces.
“The Russians think that we will use it at all areas of the front,” he added.
Militarnyi previously reported that the Pentagon approved a new aid package that includes cluster munitions.
The statement notes that the ammunition will have a 155 mm caliber.
Most likely, this regards M864 shells.
M864
The M864 is an American-made 155 mm artillery shell. A bottom gas generator is installed in the shell to increase the range of damage.
The shell is a modified version of its predecessor, the M483A1.
Compared to the M483A1, it has an increased range. However, the M864 is heavier due to the gas generator, so it has fewer submunitions – only 72.
The target hitting range reaches 28 kilometers.
The shell can be used from any 155-mm caliber artillery system in service with the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
