Estonia Opens Military Base Near Russian Border
A new military base called Reedo was opened in southern Estonia near the town of Võru.
The base is designed to deploy the Estonian Defense Forces, as well as military personnel from allied countries, including the United States.
Võru is located about 45 km from Pechory, a border town in Russia’s Pskov Oblast.
It will be used for “necessary training in accordance with NATO defense plans.”
The base consists of 14 buildings and can accommodate up to 1,000 soldiers.
They will be deployed there on a permanent or temporary basis, both for peacetime exercises and “in crisis situations.”
“If the allies come to our aid in accordance with NATO’s plans, they will need an area where they can concentrate and conduct the necessary pre-battle preparations immediately after their arrival by plane or ship,” said the 2nd Infantry Brigade commander.
The Estonian authorities announced plans to build a new military camp near the Võru River to accommodate additional allied forces in September 2022.
According to Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur, the construction cost €21 million.
“Of course, this is a very conservative construction. If you take a walk here, you can see that the conditions are quite ascetic,” the military said.
The largest base in Estonia is located near the town of Tapa in the north of the country, 150 meters from the border with Russia.
As previously reported, Estonia will invest about €0.5 billion in its military infrastructure over the next four years.
