Following France, Canada announced the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine
Canada is open to sending nontactical units to train Ukrainian troops within Ukraine, so long as such an operation took place far from the front lines.
Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair announced this.
According to him, Canada does not rule out the possibility of deploying its troops in Ukraine, which will be sent only to train the Ukrainian military.
“I do not want to put Canadian Armed Forces personnel anywhere near a combat theater that could create the perception that we are taking on any component of a combat role. It has to be done in a fairly careful and limited way, the possibility of delivering training,” added Blair.
He also clarified that this idea came about after the NATO Security Summit, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron and discussed his proposal.
A few days ago, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal gave a detailed answer in his speech in the Senate about what the French President meant when he spoke about sending troops to Ukraine.
If France deploys troops to Ukraine, they will in no way be used on the front lines.
He also clarified that if French troops are deployed to Ukraine, they will train the military, provide air defense, and protect some parts of the border.
“The struggle of Ukrainians is our struggle as well. Because they have been fighting for 2 years for the integrity of their territory, they are also fighting for the security of the European Union and France, since dictators do not go on vacation. And if Ukraine falls, the front line will inevitably move to the west,” Attal added.
Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence noted that there were already a number of Canadian troops in Ukraine protecting their diplomats.
As Militarnyi previously reported, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he did not rule out the possibility of sending a French military contingent to Ukraine.
He noted that there were currently no specific plans to deploy troops, but emphasized that such a possibility should’ve been part of a policy of strategic ambiguity to show Russia that Western countries were ready to take decisive action.
