The IRIS-T SLS anti-aircraft missile system for Ukraine was integrated on the chassis of an Italian Iveco 4×4 truck.

A photo of the air defense system was published by the Air Command West.

The launcher with four IRIS-T (AIM-2000) missiles is mounted on the chassis of an Iveco 4×4 Eurocargo truck.

In addition, this is the first official photo showing the IRIS-T SLS system, the transfer of which has been reported to Ukraine on several occasions.

The reason for integration on this chassis was probably its availability on the free market and ease of maintenance due to the prevalence of this base in the European armed forces.

It should be noted that the system uses AIM-2000 air-to-air missiles, which were integrated into ground-based platforms.

The absence of any detection and guidance systems suggests that the vehicle is used exclusively as a launcher, and detection equipment, such as radar or a machine with optical guidance, is located on another platform. The system is also integrated with the TRML-4D radar, which guides the missiles to the target.

As noted by the user “German Aid to Ukraine” on the X network, this photo shows one of the 10 IRIS-T SLS systems delivered to date. In addition, 14 additional systems are expected to be delivered.

The delivery of the first IRIS-T SLS to Ukraine was announced in August 2023. At that time, the systems were included in a military aid package from Germany in the amount of two batteries.

These systems were also delivered in August and October 2024.

IRIS-T SLS

The IRIS-T SLS is a modern German short-range air defense missile system designed to protect ground troops near the forward edge.

The system is designed to intercept enemy aircraft, helicopters and UAVs. In the SLS version, it is capable of intercepting aerodynamic targets at a distance of up to 12 kilometers and at an altitude of up to 8 kilometers.

The system is based on an IRIS-T missile with an infrared homing head that has been modernized for ground launch. The target is acquired during the final part of the flight thanks to the infrared homing head.
