Spain will increase the number of tanks transferred to Ukraine to reach 10
Spain will increase the number of Leopard 2A4 tanks planned for transfer to ten units.
Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain, announced this during a joint briefing with Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
This happened only a day after Margarita Robles, Spanish Defense Minister, announced the delivery of six tanks during her speech in parliament.
Also, during his visit to Kyiv, Pedro Sánchez mentioned combat aviation. He stated that Spain is not opposed to sending fighter jets, however, according to him, this issue needs to be “discussed with the allies.”
The Head of the Government also emphasized that to have peace, Ukraine needs to be armed, and stated: “I have no doubt about it.”
Currently, the Spanish defense company Santa Bárbara Sistemas, which specializes in modernizing and maintaining armored vehicles, is working on the preparation of six Leopard 2A4 tanks at its facilities in Alcalá de Guadaíra in Seville.
The tanks arrived there for repair in early February. They were brought from the Casetas Armored Storage Base in Zaragoza.
Spain not only transfers tanks but also helps with the training of crews and technical personnel. Spanish instructors are already training 55 Ukrainian soldiers to operate Leopard 2A4 tanks in Zaragoza.
It is expected that the preparation period will be 2.5 months. During this time, the equipment will also be modernized.
Currently, Germany, the USA, Finland, Portugal, Poland, Canada, Norway, and Great Britain have joined the tank coalition, which plans to arm Ukraine with modern Western battle tanks.
