The Netherlands cannot find a place for a new ammunition depot
The Dutch Ministry of Defense is looking for a location for a new large ammunition depot, which has sparked protests among local residents.
NOS reported on this.
Eight locations are currently being considered for the depot, but residents of the municipalities where they are located are concerned.
Locals fear that they will have to move from their homes due to the strict security rules that need to be put in place around the future ammunition depot.
It is reported that a large warehouse of the Ministry of Defense required an area of seventy hectares.
Such a location must meet many requirements, including having connections to major roads, inland waterways, and railroads, and having as few buildings nearby as possible.
Four security zones should also be created around the warehouse. Based on these conditions, eight possible sites were identified in different municipalities.
The local authorities of the regions understand the needs of the military, but they do not want to have such a facility on their territory, based on the opinion of local residents.
In addition to large ammunition depots, the Netherlands Armed Forces are looking for places to deploy smaller storage facilities, from which shells must be able to be quickly transported and used.
Last month, the Dutch Ministry of Defense ordered CV90 Mjolner self-propelled mortars.
The systems will be purchased from the Swedish company BAE Hägglunds, which manufactures the Mjolner mortar module.
According to the plan, the first deliveries of CV90 Mjolner self-propelled mortars are scheduled to begin in 2028. They will enhance the Dutch army’s fire support capabilities.
