The UK will transfer to Ukraine AMRAAM missiles for air defense systems
The UK announced the transfer of AMRAAM missiles for NASAMS air defense systems to Ukraine.
Ben Wallace, Secretary of Defense of the United Kingdom, announced this, writes Reuters.
Assistance to Ukraine was discussed at a meeting of NATO countries’ defense ministers and during the Ramstein format meeting in Brussels on Wednesday.
“Russia’s latest indiscriminate strikes on civilian areas in Ukraine warrant further support to those seeking to defend their nation. So today, I have authorized the supply of AMRAAM anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine,” he said.
The AMRAAM missiles to be delivered in the coming weeks could be used alongside the NASAMS air defense system, which the United States promises to hand over.
According to Wallace, these missiles will assist Ukraine in protecting the sky and strengthen its missile defense.
In addition, it is noted that the United Kingdom will supply Ukraine with hundreds of missiles for air defense systems of other types, additional drones, and 18 howitzers.
AIM-120 AMRAAM is an American all-weather guided missile with an active radar homing head system. It is the primary air-to-air weapon of all types of modern fighter jets of the American armed forces and in several other countries. Missiles of this class are designed to defeat air targets.
In the surface-launched version, they are launched from containers. Six of these containers are installed on the NASAMS SAM launcher.
АІМ-120А weights 150 kg. The operational range in the surface-launched version is 2.5-25 km, and the flight altitude is 0.03-16 km.
The transfer of air defense equipment to Ukraine for a total worth of 15 million euros was reported on October 12 by the Netherlands.
At the end of September, it was reported that future Ukrainian operators of NASAMS air defense systems are already undergoing training.
