The United States Congress has called for direct military action if North Korean troops are involved in the war against Ukraine.

This was reported by The Hill.

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Mike Turner stated on Wednesday that the United States should consider taking “direct military action” if North Korean troops enter the war in Ukraine.

“The Biden-Harris administration should send a clear message that North Korean troops entering this conflict is a red line for the United States,” Turner stated. He added that “if North Korean troops invade the sovereign territory of Ukraine, the United States should seriously consider taking direct military action against North Korean troops.”

In his statement, Mike Turner, in particular, proposed to allow strikes by American long-range weapons on the territory of Russia in response to the involvement of North Korean troops.

“I have long challenged the Biden-Harris administration’s unwise position of restricting Ukraine’s use of American weapons against targets in Russia. <…> If North Korean forces attack Ukraine from Russian territory, Ukraine should be allowed to use American weapons in retaliation,” Turner stated.

Prior to that, the White House has stated that, according to Washington’s estimates, at least 3,000 North Korean soldiers are being trained at Russian military bases.

“We don’t know yet whether these soldiers will be engaged in combat with the Russian military, but it is certainly a concern,” White House National Security Advisor John Kirby disclosed.

When inquired as to why the U.S. would not give Ukraine permission to use the long-range missiles, Kirby said it was still unknown whether North Korean soldiers would be deployed, and it was too early to say what impact they would have on the battlefield.

“We don’t know what they’re going to do, we don’t know if they’re going to engage or not, we don’t know what kind of forces they might have,” he explained, adding that the United States would closely monitor the situation and continue to increase security assistance to Kyiv.

Previously, Ukraine’s Chief of Intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, stated that the first North Korean soldiers might arrive in the Kursk oblast in the coming days.

“We expect the first units tomorrow (October 23, 2024) in the Kursk direction,” Budanov told The War Zone.
