Ukrainian recruits being trained on Leopard tanks under Operation UNIFIER
Ukrainian recruits are being trained in Leopard tank operation within the framework of the Operation UNIFIER initiated by Canada.
Instructors from Canada, as well as Polish and Norwegian militaries conduct training in operation of Leopard 2 tanks for Ukrainian defenders in Poland.
Ukrainian soldiers are trained by the instructors from Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) of the 1st Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group of the 3rd Canadian Division of the Canadian Army of the Canadian Armed Forces in partnership with Polish and Norwegian Armed Forces servicemen.
The General Staff adds that the military is training Ukrainian defenders to operate the tanks in order to ensure that the soldiers are well prepared to defend the country with greater mobility and firepower.
The Operation UNIFIER of the Canadian Armed Forces began in 2015 in response to a request from the Government of Ukraine to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
At that time, the training mission helped to form and increase the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Defense Forces are to receive a total of eight Leopard 2 tanks from Canada.
Canada has also recently sent to Ukraine Bergepanzer 3 armored recovery evacuation vehicle, which is intended to support these tanks.
Ottawa has already prepared and transferred the first four Leopard 2 tanks for Ukraine to one of the European countries.
At the beginning of February, the first Canadian Leopard 2A4 for the Armed Forces arrived in Poland. The tank was transported by a C-17 military transport aircraft from Halifax.
It is also known that the Ukrainian military personnel are currently undergoing training in Germany. There they are mastering the German Leopard 2A6 tanks and Marder infantry fighting vehicles.
Earlier on February 24, it was reported that the first Leopard 2 tanks for the Armed Forces of Ukraine had arrived in Ukraine.
