US sends Ukraine new M777 howitzer batch
The United States has sent Ukraine another batch of M777 155-mm towed howitzers.
This is stated in the Pentagon’s message on their Facebook page.
Artillery systems are part of the military aid package to combat Russia’s full-scale invasion which began in February this year.
“The U.S. Marine Corps M777 howitzer is loaded onto a United States Air Force C-17 Globemaster III at March Air Reserve Base, Calif. as part of U.S. security assistance to Ukraine,” the statement reads.
They’ve also posted a photo of a Ukraine designated howitzer being loaded onto the military transport aircraft at the Marsh Base in California.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine thanked the United States for its assistance in fighting Russian aggression.
As previously reported, Canada provides military and technical assistance to Ukraine to resist Russian aggression and sends humanitarian aid to civilians.
In April, Canada also sent M777 howitzers to Ukraine. It was a part of a $130 million military equipment donation, initiated after Russia launched an unprovoked full-scale attack on Ukraine in February.
The Canadian military trained Ukrainian soldiers outside of Ukraine on how to handle large-caliber howitzers.
Also in April, it was announced that Ukraine will receive Excalibur precision-guided extended-range artillery shells for 155-mm howitzers from Canada.
М777 is a 155-mm caliber howitzer with manual loading and firing rate of up to five rounds per minute. Depending on the type of projectile used, the howitzer has a firing range from 24 to 30 kilometers.
This gives an advantage over Soviet-made howitzers used by Russia in the war against Ukraine.
