12 NATO countries support German initiative to purchase air defense systems for Ukraine
More than 12 NATO countries have supported and plan to join the German initiative to purchase air defense systems for Ukraine.
The German Ministry of Defense reported about this on X.
Countries supporting the German initiative with financial packages include Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Canada.
The funds will be used to purchase the air defense systems needed by Ukraine, as well as related equipment, radars, and missiles.
Another category of countries that have joined the initiative, namely the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Romania, Belgium, and Lithuania, will directly fund missiles and other support equipment.
Countries such as the United States, France, and the United Kingdom are transferring various types of anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine to support the country’s defense capabilities.
In addition, Latvia is considering joining the German air defense initiative.
The German Air Defense Initiative was created to search for and purchase suitable air defense missile systems and missiles for them.
The initiative is somewhat similar to the Czech initiative for the purchase of artillery shells, as the search for suitable systems is carried out worldwide.
Currently, Germany has some difficulties in allocating an additional financial package for Ukraine for 2025.
Militarnyi previously reported that the German government is seeking additional funds to increase military support for Ukraine in 2024.
According to Bild, out of the €7.1 billion of aid allocated to Ukraine in 2024, most of it has already been distributed. Currently, there is a balance of €300 million that will be used to purchase artillery shells and weapons.
