The Russian invaders shelled Kharkiv on the afternoon of June 18. According to preliminary information, the Industrial Zone of the city was hit.

This is stated in the report of the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region.

According to preliminary data, the rocket fell in the Industrial district of Kharkiv. In the same area, SESU sappers uncovered the missile’s submunitions.

“We discovered a 9B899 decoy from the Iskander missile. It leaves behind a false thermal trace in order to penetrate the air defense systems. In this case, the air defense does not shoot down the missile, but knocks down these false targets,” said Anton Pedchenko, a senior sapper of the pyrotechnic group.

The 9B899 device that broke through the asphalt was first noticed by passers-by; they perceived it like an unexploded projectile.

“It is not as explosive, but the combustion temperature is high and, if you are nearby, you could get extensive burns,” said Pedchenko.

Russia is installing special decoy devices in its missiles. They were designed to help penetrate the Ukrainian air defense system.

It is not exactly known where in the missile the devices were installed. It is assumed that this would be the rear part of the missile.

9B899 devices do not have a self-destruct system, thus they are often found after the Russian shelling of Ukrainian cities.

Each such device, white in color with an orange tail stabilizer, is created in the form of a dart 30 cm long.

Decoys are released by the missile, possibly when it detects that it is targeted by the air defense missiles. In-flight, they emit a large amount of heat, which should confuse air defense missiles with an infrared homing.
