Elbit Systems was awarded a contract to supply ATMOS artillery systems to an unnamed country
The Israeli company Elbit Systems was awarded a contract worth approximately $102 million to supply ATMOS artillery systems to an international customer.
This was announced in the company’s press release.
The contract will be performed over a period of 8 years.
It assumes the supply of a battalion’s worth of ATMOS (Autonomous Truck Mounted Howitzer) truck-mounted howitzer systems.
“Elbit Systems’ comprehensive integrated artillery solutions provide a valuable competitive edge to the ground forces of our customers around the world. This contract is a vote of confidence in the advanced indirect fire solutions we provide,” Yehuda (Udi) Vered, General Manager of Elbit Systems Land, shared.
ATMOS (Autonomous Truck Mounted Howitzer System) is a 155 mm/52 caliber self-propelled howitzer system mounted on a Tatra T815 VVN 6×6 cross-country truck chassis with an armored cab.
The artillery unit of the self-propelled howitzer system is a Soltam ATHOS 2052 howitzer.
The declared firing range of conventional projectiles is 30 km, and 41 km with rocket-assisted projectiles. The rate of fire is 4 to 9 shots per minute. The transportable ammunition is 32 shells.
The self-propelled howitzer system is equipped with an onboard computer, a missile initial velocity radar, and an inertial and satellite navigation system. This allows each howitzer to operate autonomously.
The howitzer was developed for the export market. The first sample was presented back in 1999. Since then, it has been involved in tenders to renew the artillery of various armies of the world.
The Israeli army considered ATMOS for purchase but chose another national self-propelled howitzer – an improved version of the SIGMA 155 from the same manufacturer, Elbit Systems.
In January of this year, it was reported that Denmark selected ATMOS and PLUS artillery systems to arm its military. Prior to that, the Danish media reported that the plan is to purchase 19 ATMOS self-propelled howitzers systems and 8 PLUS multi-purpose launchers.
Colombia also favored Israeli self-propelled howitzers. The country plans to purchase 18 ATMOS systems.
