Italy to increase transfer of M109L self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine

Italy will strengthen Ukraine’s artillery power with additional transfers of M109L 155mm self-propelled howitzers.

The Italian La Repubblica reported that Italy has already transferred dozens of self-propelled howitzers.

As noted, the M109 self-propelled howitzers, which Italy gave to Ukraine, were repaired with American funding.

“Dozens of M109 self-propelled howitzers have been repaired and delivered. Some are already on the front line,” the report said.

Recently, eyewitnesses noticed the transportation of a significant number of M109L self-propelled howitzers at the Udine station in northeastern Italy.

As the journalists note, there are at least thirty tracked howitzers already present at the front.

At the same time, some sources say that the number of howitzers that Italy transfers to Ukraine is twice as large.

“A total of sixty howitzers have already been transferred to Kyiv or will be transferred in the near future,” the statement reads.

As previously reported, that some of the M109L self-propelled howitzers are already used by Ukrainian troops on the front lines.

Italian media reported on the transfer of these self-propelled howitzers to the Defense Forces of Ukraine last year.

The M109L is an Italian version of the American M109 self-propelled howitzer. The howitzer is equipped with a gun of 39 calibers in length, which provides a maximum range of 24-30 km.

Before sending to Ukraine, the M109L self-propelled howitzers had to undergo a check of their technical condition and other parameters.
