Metal cutting ceremony held for second Ukrainian Ada-class corvette construction in Turkey
For the construction of the second Ada-class corvette for the Ukrainian Navy, steel was cut in Turkey.
This was reported by the Defence Turk media.
It is unknown exactly when the metal cutting ceremony took place to build the hull of the future warship.
Usually, after cutting the steel, the formation of individual sections of the vessel begins, which are then combined into a hull.
The Turkish media also noted that the ship was changed at the request of the Ukrainian Navy.
“Among these changes are the power plant and vertical launchers of MICA VL anti-aircraft missiles, which are located in the aft part of the ship,” reads the article.
More details about the capabilities of the new warships of this class, which are being built for the Ukrainian Navy in Defence Turk, are not reported.
On October 2, 2022, the first Ada-class corvette was launched in Turkey, which is being built for the Ukrainian fleet.
It was called “Hetman Ivan Mazepa,” which was elected back in 2021, when its construction began. This corvette will be the first ship of this class for the Ukrainian Navy.
The contract for the construction of two ADA-class corvettes was signed by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine with Turkish companies in December 2020. The first corvette for the Ukrainian Navy was laid in Turkey in September 2021. And at the end of December, 2022 the ship’s hull began to be assembled at the shipbuilding enterprise in Istanbul.
It was previously planned that by the end of 2022, a ship with partial equipment would be towed to Ukraine for completion. However, due to the full-scale Russian invasion, these plans did not materialize.
The issue of weapons for the Ukrainian corvette, according to open sources, was not finally resolved. Neptune, Harpoon, NSM, Atmaca missiles were considered as anti-ship weapons. The role of anti-aircraft weapons was considered by the French SAM VL MICA naval SAM. The corvette’s artillery armament should consist of an OTO Melara Super Rapid 76mm gun and a Millennium 35mm gun. Murene 90 Impact torpedoes were considered as torpedo weapons.
