American tank expert Nicholas “The Chieftain” Moran gave an assessment of the use of tanks in the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Nicholas Moran has more than twenty years of military experience, including 17 years of service in the US Army National Guard.

His reviews of tanks and other armored vehicles are gaining hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube.

Recently, “The Chieftain” revealed how the hostilities influenced his view of Soviet/Russian tanks.

According to Nicholas, the Т-72 tank was a good tank for the mid-1980s, but not in the age of thermal imagers.

“Using this same tank today, in 2022, when thermal imagers can be held in your hands, it’s just looking for problems for yourself,” says Nicholas Moran.

Despite the type and year of production of the tank, “The Chieftain” claims that the thermal imager in tanks plays a big role.

“I think the Т-62 tank with thermal imaging will even be more useful than the Т-72 without it, because you will see the infantry, you will see things that Т-62 is quite capable of dealing with. Т-62 with a thermal imager is something you have to respect,” says Nicholas.

Nicholas noted that if you try to use a Cold War tank with technology of that era in it on today’s battlefield, it’s fatal.

“I really believe that it is important to have a thermal imager and a fire control system, if you at least have it, you will become combat-ready,” says Moran.

For example, Nicholas Moran mentioned cases when Ukrainian armored personnel carriers shot Russian tanks, armored vehicles, and manpower.

“Again, there is a video with Ukrainian APCs with a 30mm gun. The guys are there like playing a video game because they had a thermal imager. If you do not have a thermal imager, you should not even go to the modern battlefield,” says Nicholas.

During the military service of Nicholas Moran, thermal imagers did not have such a high-quality picture.

“We used it to get the simplest data. We didn’t always know what was in front of us. We just understood that it was a hot spot,” Nicholas says of early thermal imagers.

Nicholas Moran added that the lack of high-quality technology can be compensated for by a high level of fire power, when one of the parties has more weapons.

We add that Nicholas “The Chieftain” Moran has been advocating for the support of Ukraine since February. He was also surprised by the question of what position he chose.

“I have received many questions about my position on the current conflict in Ukraine, and I am surprised that people feel the need to ask such questions,” Nicholas Moran said on February 25, marking the Ukrainian flag on his Facebook profile.
