Preparation of Leopard 2 service center for Ukraine is being completed in Poland

Polish state arms company Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) is concluding negotiations with manufacturers of Leopard 2 tanks to carry out an overhaul of equipment in Poland, which has been transferred to Ukraine.

The PGZ President Sebastian Hvalek made the announcement during an interview with PAP.

According to him, the future Leopard 2 service center will be based at PGZ enterprises in Poznan.

“We are completing industrial negotiations with the German manufacturers Leopard – Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall, to clarify the issue of contracting and supply of spare parts, since the spare parts are a key factor for keeping the equipment in working order,” said the president of the Polish concern.

The company chairman explained that the key problem was the outdated modification of the Leopard 2A4 tank, which lacked spare parts in production.

“This does not have to be a restoration (of the tank – ed.) to the so-called initial state, but we are talking about such a level of repair that will allow the Ukrainian military to fight effectively,” said Sebastian Hvalek.

The Head of the Polish arms concern also expressed hope that the Leopard manufacturers would agree that the Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa plants could produce more types of components for the tank.

He noted that in recent years the PGZ had “negotiated a license to manufacture barrels for Leopard tanks in 2А4 and 2A5 modifications.”

As previously reported, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Alexei Reznikov at the meeting in the Ramstein format on April 21 announced plans for the creation of a Leopard 2 Tank Maintenance Center in Poland of the Ukrainian army.

Besides, Poland has a center for servicing Т-64 tanks for Ukraine at the Bumar-Łabędy plant in Gliwice.

In the future, it is also planned to repair Т-72 and PT-91 tanks.

The agreement provides that Ukrainian tanks will be serviced and put into full operation.
