Russian tank commanders criticized the anti-cumulative slat armor mounted on tank turrets.

This was told by Alexey Ukhachev, captain of the Russian tank troops in an interview with the Russian edition “Moskovskij Komsomolets.”

According to Alexey Ukhachev, they had to throw out all the slat armor because it was completely useless.

The Russian military began installing on tanksAdditional improvised anti-cumulative screens to protect the upper hemisphere of the tank in 2021.

The Russian tanker said that the machine gun did not move through this slat armor, radio stations were getting burned down when the antenna was locked in the armor.

Also, if there is any fire, it is simply impossible to get out of the tank.

“We first welded the armor to the tanks, and then removed them. First, it is inconvenient: the machine gun does not move, the antenna when it locks in the armor – the radio burns out, the connection disappears. And if there is a fire, it is simply unrealistic to get out of the tank. Because when you get up to full height – you are stuck. That’s why they were all taken down and thrown away,” said Alexei Ukhachev, a captain in the Russian army.

Russian tanker Oleksiy Ukhachev was eliminated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on May 10.

“On May 10, Captain Alexey Ukhachov died during a special military operation. Killed by a shrapnel of the Ukrainian missile Tochka-U in Balaklia. This was his second rotation to the special operation area,” – reported by “Moskovskij Komsomolets.”

Presumably, by introducing these slat armor the Russian military intended to raise the protection of tanks from the Javelin ATGM which is used by the army of Ukraine.

FGM-148 Javelin can hit the target in the least protected part of the tank – the top side, so the residual cumulative impact with such caliber of the warhead will have a powerful beyond-armour effect.

During Russia’s war with Ukraine, there were no cases when such screens managed to protect the upper part of the turret of the tank from damage from the anti-tank missiles.
