Fugitive People’s Deputy Viktor Medvedchuk, disguised as a Ukrainian soldier, was detained in Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, announced the operation to detain Viktor Medvedchuk completed by the Security Service of Ukraine.

“A special operation was completed thanks to the SSU. Well done! Details come later. Glory to Ukraine!” Zelensky wrote on Facebook, capturing a photo of the detained politician wearing a military uniform with a Ukrainian flag.

Ivan Bakanov, Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, said that Medvedchuk was wearing the uniform of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to disguise himself from law enforcement agencies.

“I am grateful to all the SSU officers, particularly investigators and counterintelligence officers, who, following the instructions of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, proved their professionalism and conducted this lightning-fast and dangerous multilevel special operation,” Bakanov said.

Viktor Medvedchuk was wearing a full set of Ukrainian military camouflage – light-colored pixels uniform with a shoulder strap on his chest.

Medvedchuk was also wearing military boots produced by the Ukrainian company TALAN.

It was reported on February 27 that Victor Medvedchuk escaped the house arrest imposed due to several proceedings – one of them concerning treason.

On February 21, the Bigus.Info investigation project reported, citing eyewitnesses, that security guards had gathered near the Medvedchuk’s estate, leader of the “Opposition Platform For Life” party, which was later followed by police arrival. According to journalists, the valuables were taken out of the house.

On October 12, 2021, the court in the case of purchasing coal from Russia through the occupied territories had put Medvedchuk under 24-hour house arrest until December 7. He was later remanded in custody.

The prosecution asked to set a bail of 1 billion UAH. Medvedchuk claimed that all the evidence in the case against him was “fabricated.”
