The Pentagon clarified details on the purchase of the NASAMS air defense systems: Ukraine will receive two batteries
The purchase of NASAMS missile systems is expected to bolster Ukraine’s defense against advanced aerial threats.
The Pentagon reports about this.
The air defense system can defend against aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, and cruise missiles.
The Army awarded a contract for $182 million on Aug. 26 for the delivery of two NASAMS batteries to Ukraine.
The contract also includes training and logistical support to Ukraine’s military and security forces.
“NASAMS are just the latest in the diverse set of air defense capabilities we are delivering to Ukraine,” Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment William A. LaPlante said. “These are proven systems that will make a real difference on the battlefield,” he added.
The purchase of two NASAMS missile systems batteries is part of the third Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative package.
It was announced on July 1 and had committed $820 million in security assistance to Ukraine.
This military support package also included up to 150,000 rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition and four counter-artillery radars.
Yuriy Ihnat, Spokesman of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, previously announced that the air defense of Ukraine will receive two batteries of the NASAMS air defense system.
On August 24, it was announced that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive six NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems and missiles for them.
NASAMS are included in a new $3 billion U.S. military aid package.
