The Prosecutor General of Ukraine – camps for russian POW are already functioning in Ukraine

Ukraine War with Russia

Ukraine was forced to set up full-fledged camps for captured russian soldiers.

The Militarnyi informs about it.

In the interview with BBC News, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Iryna Venediktova, confirmed that the camps for russian prisoners of war are already functioning.

“Of course, I have data (on the number of prisoners of war), but I cannot answer questions that do not fall within my competence. As for prisoners of war, they are the responsibility of a specially created law enforcement agency, the Ukrainian Military Law-Enforcement Service.

Of course, russian prisoners of war in Ukraine have to be in special military camps, and we have worked it out. We have signed a joint order with the Ministry of Defense, the Interior Ministry, and other relevant services, but this issue is specific to them (Military Law-Enforcement Service)” – said Irina Venediktova.

When asked by a BBC journalist: But about these camps – Are they already in Ukraine?

Iryna Venediktova answered: They already exist. We worked on it. They were set up because, again, this is required by the Geneva Conventions.

“I want us to be very open. We worked according to international humanitarian law, our national legislation and did not cross any boundaries so that we would have questions later, ”the Prosecutor General said.

Venediktova also noted: “As for prisoners of war, even medical care is provided to them at almost the same level as our boys.”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that some russian prisoners of war refuse to return to Russia.

On March 18, the head of state addressed the relatives of russian soldiers and reminded that there are phone numbers availiable on the Internet where they can contact and find out what really happened to them.

“Recently new russian conscripts have been taken prisoner. Among them are those who refuse to return to russia. There are many who are not even mentioned in russia, who are not trying to be taken away, whose families recieved death notifications even though they are in our captivity and alive…We did not expect to take thousands of prisoners. We do not need 13 or more thousands more russian soldiers killed. We did not want this war. We only want peace and we want you to love your children more than you are afraid of your government, “Zelensky said.
