The Republic of China Armed Forces (Taiwan) have been put on high alert in connection with the exercises conducted by the People’s Republic of China.

The Associated Press reported on this.

The Army, Navy and Air Force have been put on high alert. To ensure airspace security, fighter jets have been organized on air duty.

The Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of China stated that China’s maneuvers “undermined regional peace and stability”.

On Thursday, May 23, the Ministry of National Defense of the People’s Republic of China informed that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had launched joint exercises of the Navy, Air Force and Rocket Forces near the island of Taiwan.

The maneuvers started at 7:45 a.m. local time and will take place in the Taiwan Strait and are scheduled to end on May 24.

Naval Colonel Li Xi, spokesman for the PLA’s Eastern Command, said the exercise had been”a severe punishment for separatist forces seeking Taiwan’s independence” and “a stern warning against provocations and interference from outside forces.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin, for his part, threatened that “pro-independence forces [in Taiwan] would end up with shattered skulls after facing China’s grand scheme for full unification.”

The Republic of China is actively developing its military potential, especially by strengthening its Navy.

In March, Militarnyi reported that the Taiwanese Navy had adopted two low-profile Tuo Chiang-class corvettes armed with a powerful missile arsenal.

These are the fifth and sixth vessels of the modified Tuo Chiang design. In total, the country is to receive 12 boats under the order, which should strengthen Taiwan’s position in a potential confrontation with China.

The main purpose of ships of this class is to fight enemy ships in shallow waters and coastal waters during instant attack and retreat tactics. For this purpose, they are armed with a powerful arsenal of anti-ship missiles, and their design is based on low-observability technologies.
