The Italian Senate confirmed the government’s decision to supply arms to Ukraine in 2023.

Reuters reported about this.

Guido Crosetto, Italy’s Minister of Defense, addressed parliamentarians. He emphasized that the supply of weapons to the Armed Forces of Ukraine could be stopped only after the start of peace negotiations.

“I am aware that military aid will have to end sooner or later, and will end when we have the peace talks that we are all hoping for… There is no doubt that we all want peace, but this goal cannot be pursued without providing assistance to a country facing unilateral aggression in violation of international law,” Guido Crosetto said.

Following a debate on the governmental proposition, the Senate approved it with a 143-to-29 vote.

According to the document, in 2023 Italy will supply Ukraine with weapons in accordance with NATO and EU allies.

The essence of the decision is that the military aid packages to Ukraine throughout 2023 will be sent without agreement with the parliament.

The previous government of Mario Draghi approved five military aid packages to Ukraine. The content of the aid was not disclosed.

At the same time, it is known that the Armed Forces of Ukraine use Italian FH70 howitzers and Mod. 63 mortars.

At the beginning of November, a representative of the already renewed ruling coalition announced that Rome is ready to transfer various air defense equipment to Ukraine, including the Franco-Italian SAMP-T SAMS and the Italian Aspide anti-aircraft missile system. This also regards the Stinger MANPADS.
