Latvia has already sent 271 cars to Ukraine that were confiscated for drunk driving.

The total value of confiscated cars is estimated at almost a million euros, Delfi reports.

According to the State Revenue Service of Latvia, since the beginning of 2023, 271 cars have been transferred to Ukraine for a total preliminary amount of €903,453.

In addition, the government is considering documents on the transfer of 34 more cars to Ukraine with a total value of €161,880.

On March 7, 2023, the Latvian Saeima unanimously supported amendments to the law on support for the civilian population of Ukraine that created grounds for transferring vehicles confiscated from drunk drivers to the ownership of Ukraine.

“At the moment we can sell cars confiscated from drunk drivers, recycle them or disassemble them for spare parts, but we see that in the current situation they would be a useful support for people of Ukraine,” said Raimonds Bergmanis, chairman of the Defense Commission.

The decision to transfer cars will be made by the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers in each case.

The transfer process is planned to be organized through an organization that cooperates with the Ukrainian government and has received specific requests for aid.

The first eight confiscated cars were shipped to Ukraine the next day.

Confiscated cars were given, in particular, to the Vinnytsia Regional Clinical Hospital and the territorial medical association of the Kupiansk Council, as well as to army units.

As previously reported, in Latvia, lawmakers want to transfer cars with Russian license plates to Ukraine.

As stipulated by the draft law, the owner of a vehicle registered in Russia will have to register the vehicle. He will also have to either take it out of Latvia within three months of the law’s entry into force.
