Norway to provide Ukraine with additional NASAMS systems

Norway will provide Ukraine with two complete NASAMS firing units in cooperation with the United States.

The news was published on the official government website of Norway with reference to the Minister of Defense Bjørn Arild Gram.

“Ukraine has a critical need to defend itself against missile attacks, and Norway will assist,” Bjørn Arild Gram said.

In cooperation with the United States, Norway will provide Ukraine with two NASAMS firing units. They will come in addition to the two firing units provided by the United States last fall.

The composition of the NASAMS air defense system battery can vary, but it usually includes three firing units, each of which includes 2-3 missile launchers, one AN/MPQ-64F1 Improved Sentinel radar, one control vehicle and one vehicle with the MSP500 electro-optical sensor.

Each fire platoon of the air defense system is capable of working independently or in conjunction with other platoons in the battery.

NASAMS has proven to be an effective air defense system. Adding two more firing units will significantly improve Ukraine’s ability to protect its cities and critical infrastructure from Russian missile attacks.

Norway will also train Ukrainian personnel in the maintenance and operation of the air defense system.

“Norway has previously contributed equipment and training to U.S. donations of NASAMS to Ukraine. These donations have been highly valued and contributed to defeat missile attacks. Continuing Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure highlight the need to further improve Ukraine’s air defense.

Ukraine has repeatedly requested international partners to provide more and better air defense systems,” Gram said.

Ukraine already has two NASAMS air defense systems in service, which were handed over by the United States as part of international military aid in October.

Taking into account six more ordered batteries, Washington intends to supply Ukraine with a total of eight such new air defense systems.

Previously, Canada announced the purchase of the NASAMS air defense system for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
