The Polish government is considering transferring Soviet-era anti-aircraft missiles from its stockpile to Ukraine.

President of Poland Andrzej Duda said this during a press conference in Vilnius.

The President of Poland emphasized that he had already discussed the transfer of missiles for air defense systems with the President of Ukraine.

“During the bilateral meeting, President Zelenskyi and I discussed the stockpile of missiles we have from the Soviet era. We talked about the possibility of transferring them to Ukraine to provide air defense. I will talk to our Defense Minister when I return to Warsaw,” Duda said at a press conference.

Specific types of ammunition or air defense systems were not named, but Poland has such systems in service or in storage bases as S-125 Neva, S-200 Vega, 2K12 Kub and Osa-AK mobile surface-to-air missile systems.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces use all types of Soviet-era systems, the ammunition for which may be in the depots of the Polish Ministry of Defense.

Since 2022, Poland has repeatedly transferred significant amounts of ammunition and Soviet-era air defense systems from its own stockpiles.

In particular, air defense systems of the Polish army such as Osa-AK and modernized Osa-P, ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft twin-barreled autocannons and ZU-23-4 SPAAG were seen in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Air Force also uses Polish modernized S-125 Newa SC SAM, which were mounted on a tank chassis to improve the mobility of the system.

The Ukrainian military uses these systems both to defend facilities in the rear from Russian missile attacks and to cover ground troops on the front line.

In addition to Soviet-era weapons, the Ukrainian Defense Forces also actively use modern Polish Grom man-portable air-defense systems and its further development, the Piorun MANPADS.

As previously reported, on April 10, the US State Department made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale of HAWK Phase III Missile System Sustainment to the Government of Ukraine.
